Behind the Bag: Jo Carmichael

Behind the Bag: Jo Carmichael

Interior design is my guilty pleasure, and I could scroll Jo Carmichael's instagram all day long! Today she's sharing her favourite products, trends and what's in her bag...

Who are you and what do you do?

Jo Carmichael. Interior Designer specialising in industrial and contemporary country interiors. I love working with tertiary colours and mixing up the styles and eras to create unique and eclectic interiors.

What is the most beautiful thing you own?

My "big girl light", that’s what my husband likes to call it! It’s an industrial light from Wo & We in France. I have wanted one for years and bought it whilst we saved up to complete the whole of the downstairs renovation. It’s taken pride of place on the first wall you see as you enter the kitchen.

What is the most practical thing you own?

A vintage Dutch settlers display cabinet, it houses all of my props from my magazine styling days. Best piece of furniture I have ever invested in. It stops all my props and glassware from cluttering the house.

What must you have in your bag before you leave home?

My Sukin Paw Paw lip balm and my current notebook of some sort, My phone and sunnies. My friend makes this beautiful clove antibacterial spray which smells divine and very wintery and currently that’s been a staple.

Which travel destination is next on your bucket list?

Ooh that's a hard one as I have so many destinations in mind. Japan, skiing and a food/ shopping trip was on the cards for next year. However, with travel restrictions, I can definitely be happy to focus on Cape Leveque and warmer weather instead. I did spot Black Diamond lake, WA the other day which is on the list for the next 4WD weekender.

What products or brands are you loving at the moment - fashion, homewares or beauty?

I’m loving Le Stripe in Melbourne. I discovered them at Darling & Domain in Mosman Park last week and couldn’t resist a coat from there, I was only popping in to have a browse. I was also recommended The Ordinary brand recently, it was a bit of a navigation to understand what was good for my skin but they have been a revelation for me, along with using a proper zinc moisturiser by Sukin.
Homewares, I’m a big fan of Object Union, I’ve known Bec for a while now since moving to Perth and she takes lovely pictures and has a great eye for homewares. She popped over the other day and we had a laugh photographing these shots of myself in my new home reno.

What are you reading, watching or listening to?

I’m listening to The Great Indoors, by Sophie Robinson and Kate Watson- Smyth. I used to work with Sophie in London as a magazine stylist and she’s very fun to listen to. The two of them discuss some great interior topics and industry interviews, they make me laugh out loud a lot.

Which bag would you reach for - the classic neutrals or the statement metallic gold or silver?

Classic tans and camel colours are are my thing as I find they go with most outfits but, as I’m a big lover of green, I couldn’t resist the new Army colourway.

Which is your favourite bag from the Bahru collection and why?

I’ve owned a few now but my favourite is the Rome. It a great size and also fits my iPad folder in for consults. Then over the shoulder it goes when I have too many samples to carry.
